The SBC Center, as it was originally named, debuted in 2002 as the new home of the San Antonio Spurs. The SBC Center was built on the grounds of the Freeman coliseum, a historic venue that played host to many events in San Antonio over the years, including the Spurs. The SBC Center was built not to compete with the Freeman, but to compliment it in hosting great events. The SBC Center was also built on the grounds where the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo hosted its annual festival, and the design of the SBC Center was made to accommodate a number or events associated with the Rodeo, including Bull Riding, Barrel Racing, and concerts. The SBC Center grounds also house numerous holding pens for animals of all sizes that participate in the Stock Show, and room for the carnival and festivities that go with the Rodeo. The naming rights of the Arena were purchased by SBC, a telecommunications giant that is headquartered in San Antonio. The 20 year deal is worth $41 million. When SBC merged with AT&T, the arena was renamed after the new company, giving the AT&T Center the name it has today.
